introduction in descriptive text

Look at the picture above! As an English teacher, actually you can introduce your students to descriptive text. This text is to describe things physically or characteristically. Introducing the descriptive text, in my experience, is forming a text by making outline for writing activity. I think it is better than giving a reading text sheet. How do you start teaching your student? Start with some related vocabularies, such as prepositions: beside, next to, in front of, behind, on, in the middle etc.
Then give your students some questions about some names of rooms in English. As an Indonesian, I can test my students some names of rooms. What is ... in English?
a. ruang tamu: living room
b. kt utama (kamar tidur utama): main bedroom
c. ruang makan: dining room
d. dapur: kitchen
e. garasi mobil terbuka: carport
f. kamar mandi: bathroom
After that, ask some concept questions to your students as an outline.
1. How many rooms are in the house? There are seven rooms.
2. What are they? They are a living rooms, dining room, kitchen, bathroom, and two bedrooms.
3. where is the living room? It is in the middle of house.
4. Where is the dining room? It is next to the living room behind the kitchen.
5. Where is the bathroom? The bathroom is beside the kitchen or behind the carport.
6. Where are the bedrooms? The main bedroom is beside the living room. It is beside the my living room.
7. Who sleeps in the main bedroom? My parents sleep inside the main bedroom.

After that, order your students to arrange the answers above in the form of paragraphs. Don't forget to give a title of the text. Here is the example.

I have a small house but is very clean. I fell convenient to stay in it. There are eight rooms in my house. They are a living room, dining room, kitchen, bathroom, and two bedrooms.
The living room is in the middle of house. The dining room is next to the living room behind the kitchen. The bathroom is beside the kitchen or behind the carport. The main bedroom is beside the living room. It is beside the my living room. My parents sleep inside the main bedroom.

Next, try to ask the students to describe their own houses. Then you may use other topics for describing such as, physical appearance, city, and so on.
